How do we celebrate National Farmer's Market Week?
To us, every week is the right week to celebrate the importance of a local Certified Farmer's Market. But this week (August 7-13) has been designated as the perfect time to share your appreciation of your local market and its participating farmers because it is the peak of the growing season.
Stop by one of our locations to load up on healthy fruits and vegetables and spread the cheer with a meal prepared for friends or a little shout out on social media. Happy Farmer's Market Week!
When will Sunday be reopening downtown?
We are incredibly fortunate to have our location at Arden Fair still available for the big Sunday Certified Farmers' Market. A lot of people have expressed their eagerness to have us back under the W/X freeway downtown, as that has been our home for decades. We are planning to reopen under the shelter of that overpass as soon as the space is ready and safe enough to accommodate us. We have been told this could be as early as mid fall. Our anticipated reopening date has changed many times, and we truly appreciate your patience.
Do you have any seasonal markets downtown?
Yes! We have our chef's market on Wednesdays on Capitol Mall open to the public. The market will run through the end of September. Chefs especially love this market because they can get the freshest ingredients directly from the farmer to plan their menus for the end of the week. The hours for that market are 9 AM to 1 PM and lunch vendors will be present in addition to the farmer's market. EBT exchange is available.
What's in season right now?
We've reached the last few weeks for Sacramento berries. Figs are also ready now, but their season is very short. Don't miss out!
A true favorite, the O'Henry Peach, can be found at most stone fruit stands. Stone fruit in a dazzling array of shapes, sizes, and colors are perfectly juicy and sweet right now. Kids love pretty pluots in their school lunches.
Tomatoes of all kinds are so nicely ripe you can smell their savory aroma.
Summer veggies are in full effect. This includes corn, okra, eggplant, long beans, green beans, bitter melon, cucumbers, squash, and so much more.
Grapes have just started to show up on the farmers' tables. And don't forget the hallmark of summer; a big slice of chilled melon.
Fall will bid adieu to some of our summer treats, but will bring us persimmons, pomegranates, and some freshly harvested walnuts.
